Lauren Chipeur
Overview
Lauren Chipeur (b. 1989) is an artist based in Calgary, Canada on Treaty 7 Territory. She makes material + site responsive installations that engage ceramic processes as a way to untangle or distill new ways to know things.
My current research uses ceramic materials and processes as a lens to reflect on how we understand the material realities we inhabit. Recently I have undertaken a variety of activities: digging up 25 clays in Alberta and Saskatchewan, producing a ream of 8.5” x 11” documents fired in porcelain; using clay from a Condo construction site in downtown Montréal; formulating a glaze recipe based on the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) of minerals we eat everyday; and developing a reduction firing schedule that follows the path of oxygen from present day to 4.5 billion years ago. The kiln acts like a time machine and the objects inside passengers.
